Hamstring strains are a common occurrence with any sport/activity that requires you to sprint at full speed. 🏃‍♂️
.
The hamstring has many purposes during running and sprinting, with one of them being contracting eccentrically (contracting and lengthening at the same time) to slow down the lower part of your leg as it strides forward. If our sprinting volume goes up, or if you sprint for the first time after a long break (I see you weekend warriors😉), our hamstrings might not have the capacity to handle the stress which leads to muscle strain.
.
.
An excellent, well-researched exercise to significantly reduce the number of hamstring strains is called the Nordic Hamstring Curl. Shown in the video is a good starting point for this exercise with the assistance of a band.
.
The main focus is to try to lower down as slowly as possible to build up the eccentric strength of the hamstring.
.
Break when you can no longer control the movement and reset to the top. Start with low volume and build up as you can!
