Chiropractor for Pregnancy Pain in Kansas City
Pregnancy Pain
Pregnancy creates an altered and new center of gravity for the expecting mother. During pregnancy, elevated hormone levels increase joint laxity, which creates abnormal joint positioning and motion. These processes change body mechanics, add pressure and change muscle length and tension- creating muscle imbalances within the body and causing expecting mothers to experience pain and discomfort.
Conditions we Treat
There are three main joints of the pelvis, two sacroiliac joints, and the pubic symphysis. The sacroiliac joints, or SI joints, are composed of an ilium and sacrum. Often, people can feel their SI joints—they are the two bumps on the low back roughly two inches away from the spine. The pubic symphysis is the union of the two pubic bones, which can be felt a few inches below your belt line. This entire complex creates what is known as the pelvic cavity. A growing baby requires room for expansion and will push out on these joints. Typical pregnancy pains can include carpal tunnel type pain (numbness/tingling), SI pain, stomach pain, lower back pain and numbness/tingling down the leg.

Pregnancy creates an altered and new center of gravity for the expecting mother. This process adds pressure and discomfort and changes the muscle length and tension. Our clinic employs the method of Kinesio Taping to act as a pain relief tool in between visits. KT tape is a clinically effective tool for relieving symptoms associated with pregnancy. KT tape is theorized to work by adding an artificial layer of muscular support as well as increasing the sensory fibers on the belly and back in order to ignore pain fibers.
Frequently Asked Questions
I'm experiencing stomach pain during pregnancy (1st trimester). Can a chiropractor help me?
Especially in the first trimester, we would recommend that you get thoroughly evaluated by your OB-GYN to make sure there aren’t any complications with the pregnancy before seeing a chiropractor for pregnancy-related stomach pain. If it turns out to be musculoskeletal pain, then we may be able to help you after ruling out all red flags.
Is it safe to receive chiropractic care during pregnancy?
Chiropractic care during pregnancy is generally considered safe, and can be very helpful with reducing musculoskeletal pain throughout the duration of the pregnancy. However, there are a few treatments and positions that may need to be avoided during pregnancy just to ensure the safety of the patient and the child, so be sure to ask your chiropractor about specific pregnancy pain treatments when seeking care in Kansas City.
Can a chiropractor help with morning sickness?
Chiropractic care can potentially help reduce the symptoms of nausea and vomiting (aka morning sickness). While not fully understood, morning sickness can have many potential causes or triggers. Triggers associated with positioning, posture, and function of the diaphragm may see a reduction in feelings of nausea and vomiting, but results are not guaranteed.
